A plumbing fixture is anything that delivers or drains water: a faucet, sink, toilet, tub, shower valve or hose bib. Swapping one like-for-like is often straightforward. Changing its location, adding a new one or connecting it to old pipe is where a project can grow.
This guide sorts fixture jobs into three groups: simple swaps, jobs that need preparation and jobs that need a licensed plumber. Use it to decide before you buy the fixture.
Three kinds of fixture jobs
| Type of job | Examples | Typical approach |
|---|---|---|
| Like-for-like swap | New faucet on the same sink, new showerhead, new toilet in the same place | Homeowner or plumber, usually no permit. |
| Swap with surprises | Corroded valves, stuck shutoffs, mismatched rough-in | Plumber, because the pipe behind the fixture changes. |
| New location or new fixture | Adding a sink, moving a toilet, new shower | Licensed plumber, permit and inspection. |
Checks before you buy
Confirm the sink or countertop hole count for a faucet. Measure the toilet rough-in. For a shower, find out whether the valve behind the wall is a standard type or a proprietary one. A new trim kit often fits only the old valve it was made for, so a mismatch means opening the wall.
Look at what is under the sink or behind the wall. If the shutoff valves are old, replace them with the fixture. If the pipes are galvanized and corroded, expect the repair to grow. Plan for that cost before you start.
Order of the work
Shut off water
Close the fixture shutoff or the main. Open the lowest faucet to drain the line.
Remove the old fixture
Disconnect supply lines and the drain, then remove mounting hardware.
Prepare the surface
Clean the mounting area, and inspect the flange, trap or valve for wear.
Install and test
Set the new fixture with the right sealant or gasket, reconnect and test for leaks.
Shower valves and trim
A shower has two parts. The trim is what you see: the handle, the plate and the showerhead. The valve is behind the wall and controls the mix of hot and cold. You can usually change the showerhead and sometimes the handle without touching the valve.
If you want a new style of handle and the valve is a different brand, the new trim may not fit. Replacing the valve means opening the wall, which turns a one-hour job into a tile and drywall project. Take a photo of the valve, if you can see it, before you buy trim.
Outdoor fixtures and hose bibs
Hose bibs fail quietly when a hose is left attached. Water in the spigot and the pipe can freeze and crack the pipe inside the wall on a cold night. Foothill neighborhoods in Saratoga can see colder mornings than the valley floor. Remove hoses in winter, and consider a frost-free bib when you replace one.
A backflow preventer on a hose bib keeps dirty water from being drawn back into the house supply. Most new bibs include one. If your bib does not, ask us about adding it.
Saratoga rules and conditions that affect fixture work
The City of Saratoga building division is the permit office for work inside the city. Like-for-like swaps often do not need a permit, but moving a fixture or adding one generally does. The Town of Los Gatos has its own building division for Los Gatos addresses.
San Jose Water Company serves most Saratoga homes, and its groundwater reads roughly three times harder than Valley Water imported surface supply. Hard water leaves scale on fixtures and in cartridges, so choose fixtures with replaceable cartridges and plan to clean aerators and showerheads on a schedule.
Practical meaning: if your house has hard water and an old galvanized supply, a new fixture will not fix low pressure that comes from the pipe. Test pressure and flow before and after.

Hire a plumber when you are adding or moving a fixture, when the shutoff valve will not close, when you find rust or leaking pipe, when the shower valve is behind tile or when gas is involved. Mistakes in these jobs cause leaks inside walls, where they can run for weeks.
Our plumbing installation service covers new fixtures, and faucet repair and toilet repair cover individual fixtures. For a leak you cannot trace, see leak detection.
Fixtures and water efficiency
California sets limits on flow rates for faucets, showerheads and flush volume for new fixtures. A fixture bought from a reputable seller meets them. Older fixtures from the 1980s or earlier use more water, so replacing them can save water and lower your bill.
Choose finishes you can maintain. A finish that scratches or tarnishes in hard water can look worn in a year. Brass bodies with replaceable parts usually outlast plastic ones. Los Gatos homeowners can also read our Los Gatos page for local service details.

Questions Saratoga Homeowners Ask
Often yes, if the shutoff valves work and the sink holes match. A stuck valve is a reason to call a plumber.
Like-for-like swaps often do not. Moving or adding fixtures usually does. Ask the City of Saratoga building division.
The valve is behind the wall. The brand often appears on the trim plate or in your house records. A plumber can identify it.
Not if the cause is in the pipe or the pressure regulator. Test pressure at a hose bib first.
Yes, if they are old or stiff. It costs little and avoids a later flood.
