What to expect

When your emergency plumber is on the way

The first minutes decide how much damage a leak does. Close the main shutoff if you can reach it, then call so a plumber can be sent. Here is the order we follow on most emergency calls.

STEP 1

Stop the water

Close the main valve clockwise. For a water heater leak, close the cold water valve above the tank and switch the heater off.

STEP 2

Stay out of harm

Keep clear of wet outlets and appliances. If you smell gas, leave and call 911 and PG&E at 1-800-743-5000.

STEP 3

Record the damage

Photograph what you see for your insurer before you start cleanup.

STEP 4

Call the 24/7 line

Share your address, ZIP and what you see so the right crew and parts come with us.

Local know-how

Why Saratoga plumbing has its own quirks

Saratoga is a city of about 30,000 on the edge of the Santa Cruz Mountains foothills, and its streets run from flat valley blocks to steep wooded hillsides. That shape matters to a plumber. A hillside lot tends to have a long sewer lateral, mature trees close to the pipe and water pressure that climbs as the street drops. A gauge on a hose bib tells you what your house sees.

The Village along Big Basin Way was named a California Historical Landmark in 1950 and holds the oldest buildings in the city. Older buildings often still have galvanized supply pipe and clay drains, so we plan for old materials before we open a wall. In newer parts of town like the Golden Triangle, between Saratoga Avenue, Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road and Cox Avenue, the problems tend to be water heaters and fixtures instead.

Water and sewer service follow agency lines, not city lines. San Jose Water Company supplies most Saratoga homes, and its groundwater runs roughly three times harder than Valley Water imported supply, which shortens the life of heaters and fixtures on harder streets. Part of Saratoga also falls inside West Valley Sanitation District, according to the Santa Clara County LAFCO service review. When a backup happens, a camera shows whether the blockage is yours or the district’s.
