If every drain in your house is slow, a toilet gurgles when you run the shower or sewage is surfacing at a low drain, the main sewer line is blocked. Our line is open 24/7. Stop using water, keep the dishwasher and washing machine off and call. The blockage will not clear itself, and each flush adds more to the backup.
Sewer line cleaning is different from sink-level drain work. The lateral runs from your foundation to the public sewer connection, usually four inches wide and fifty to a hundred feet long or more on hillside lots. It needs larger machines, and it needs a plan for what comes after the blockage is gone.
Why main lines clog
Roots
Fine roots find the joints in clay and older pipe and grow into the flow. Saratoga lots carry large trees, and roots are a common cause of lateral blockage on older clay or concrete pipe.
Grease and scale
Fat that cooled and hardened lines the walls over years. The channel narrows until a small clog stops it completely.
Wipes and paper products
Flushable wipes do not break down. They catch on rough spots and root hairs and build into a mass.
Pipe damage
A sag, an offset joint or a crack gives debris a place to settle. Cleaning treats the blockage, a camera shows the cause.
How we clear a main line
Find the cleanout
We open the cleanout near the foundation or at the property line. A clear access point speeds the work and keeps mess out of the house.
Cable the blockage
A heavy drum machine with a cutting head breaks through roots and packed debris and restores flow.
Scour the pipe
For grease and scale we follow with a jetter that washes the walls clean. See hydro jetting.
Camera check
A camera run confirms the line is open and shows whether the pipe needs repair.
While you wait for the crew
Keep the situation from getting worse.
- Stop using water. That includes the dishwasher, washing machine, showers and toilets.
- Clear the area around the cleanout so the crew can reach it quickly.
- If sewage is on a floor, keep people and pets away and open windows if you can do so safely.
- Do not pour drain cleaners into the pipe. They do not clear roots and add danger for the crew.
Cable, jet or both
| Problem | Best method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Root intrusion | Cable with cutting head, then jetting | Cutters sever roots, jetting flushes the debris. |
| Packed debris or wipes | Cable or jet depending on pipe size | Breaks up and moves solids. |
| Grease coating | Hydro jetting | High-pressure water strips the walls. |
| Scale in older cast iron | Jetting or mechanical descaling | Removes buildup that cabling would leave behind. |
| Recurring blockages in one spot | Camera inspection | Shows whether the pipe is damaged. |
If the line keeps clogging at the same distance, a damaged pipe is the usual cause. Our sewer line repair page explains the options, and the camera inspection shows what is there. For a clog in a single fixture, drain cleaning is the right page.
Preventing the next blockage
Keep grease and wipes out of the drain. Run cold water for a few seconds after using the garbage disposal. Do not plant fast-growing trees or shrubs over the lateral. Roots seek water, and a sewer line with open joints is the best source around.
If roots have been a problem, a scheduled cleaning every year or two can keep them in check before they cause a backup. A camera check after cleaning shows how fast they are returning. Homes near the Village and Saratoga Creek, where trees are large and pipes are older, often benefit from a regular schedule.
Sewer service in Saratoga
Part of Saratoga is served by West Valley Sanitation District, according to the Santa Clara County LAFCO service review. Property owners are usually responsible for the lateral from the house to the public connection. If neighbors on your street are seeing backups too, the blockage may be in the public main, and the sewer agency should be told. A camera run from your cleanout tells us which side of the connection the blockage is on.
Insurance often excludes the cost of clearing a blocked sewer line, but sudden water damage that results may be covered, or a sewer backup rider may apply. Ask before cleanup, and photograph everything.
Main line blocked?
Call the 24/7 line. A crew with the right equipment is the fastest way back to working drains.
Where we clean sewer lines
We serve Saratoga 95070 from the Village to the foothills, and nearby Los Gatos (95030, 95032), Monte Sereno and Campbell. Our Los Gatos plumbing page covers how we work there.
Common Questions
Yes. The line is answered 24/7 including holidays. Stop using water in the house until the crew arrives.
If several fixtures are backing up together, or sewage appears at the lowest drain in the house, the main line is the likely cause.
There is no set schedule. Homes with mature trees or older clay pipe benefit from a cleaning every year or two. A camera check shows how quickly buildup returns.
Done properly, no. Cables and jetters are chosen to match the pipe material. A camera run before or after shows the pipe condition.
Cutting removes the roots in the pipe, but they often return through the same joints. Lining the pipe seals the joints. A camera tells us whether lining is an option.
It is usually a capped pipe near the house foundation or at the property line, often two to four inches wide. If you cannot find it, we can look when we arrive.
If other homes on your street are also backing up, the blockage may be in the public main. Contact the sewer agency. We can confirm with a camera whether your lateral is clear.
Most do not break down like paper and are a leading cause of main line blockages. Put wipes in the trash, not the toilet.
